Given dependence of western weapon systems on GPS satellites, NATO has  an imperative to watch Russian "killer satellites...."

Of course, the Ukraine/Russia interaction goes beyond navies and exercises to economic alliances with the European Union, oil/gas (see the Petrol tab above) and even chocolate.  

Vladimir Putin is protecting Russian interests and threatening both Ukraine and a broader Europe via his Black Sea Fleet and Kavkaz/Zapad exercises.  In spite of the labyrinth of anti-ship missile fields of fire and other Russian naval presence in the Black Sea, the United States has placed two guided missile destroyers there.
