Of course, the Ukraine/Russia interaction goes beyond navies to economic alliances with the European Union, oil/gas (see the Petrol tab above) and even chocolate.  

Vladimir Putin is protecting Russian interests in Ukraine and threatening both Ukraine and a broader Europe via his Black Sea Fleet and Kavkaz-2016 exercises.
